So Long, Summer
Thank goodness for a three-day weekend. I forgot it was Labor Day until this Monday which means A) my mind has been in some weird alternate reality where I don’t pine for the holidays like a puppy begging for table scraps, and B) I have no big plans.
Well, unless you count donating some old clothes to Goodwill and trying to sell some more stuff on eBay. I’ll likely try to rid my closet of a good chunk of summer clothing that I haven’t worn since ninth grade. This is what I’m now calling my So Long, Summer party.
That’s right, good riddance to sweltering air that coats your skin in a thick layer of humidity. To air conditioned rooms that give just-shaved legs fresh scruff. To random rainstorms that short circuit the power and leave my seventh-floor apartment like an oven.
See ya later.
I’m ready for fall. True, the season just isn’t the same in the Mid-Atlantic; the orange and red leaves can’t rival the pumpkin, crimson and neon yellow ones I grew up with in New England. But it’s wonderful enough.
In this sticky heat, I’m longing for crisp air that smells like firewood. Thick sweaters that hug your skin when the temperature drops at night. Cider sold at roadside markets. Pumpkins that dot every house on the block. And crunchy, tart apples like Macouns and Staymans that only show up for three months of the year.
I’m looking forward to these, too:
And apples right off the tree.
It’s a shame this is the shortest season. Because it’s hands-down the best.
How do you welcome fall?

I’m starting out the weekend with plans for one day. I hope to use at least some time to get together a goodwill box of my own. Clothes (from highschool- seriously, how do we hang out to that stuff?) and stuff I’ve moved around with me that only seems to sit in boxes at whatever new place I’m at.
It’s like spring cleaning. Six months late…
Have a good weekend!

I’m so thrilled for fall too! I forgot it was already Labor Day weekend too. Probably because it is filled with stuff for my friend who is getting married. Should be fun things though at least. I don’t have to bring presents to any of them so thats a major plus! LOL

So true! I am definitely ready for some crisp autumn days with pumpkins lattes and chili. New England falls are absolutely gorgeous but at least in the Mid-Atlantic your fall lasts longer and spring comes sooner!

Mmm…pumpkin lattes. Those sound perfect. Alright weather, c’mon and cool down enough for them.

It really is killer. I had no idea how much thicker the air was in DC than New England. The air is swampy in August!

I like autumn for a change of pace but I still mourn the end of summer! That’s my favorite season by far!

I LOVE fall. Fall is probably my favourite season, except when it’s dry. I feel like I’ll be loving the leaves because I can take awesome photos.

I go sweater shopping, too, at the start of fall. I’m not sure I “need” them but I NEED them.

I welcome fall with open arms. Don’t get me wrong, I love the spring with its new flowers and the sun beginning to peek out. I like the summer sun (although in San Francisco it’s summer fog) and winter chill. But Fall is my favorite. Bring on the pumpkins to carve and seeds to roast!

I can’t wait for good apples. I had a mealy apple yesterday that I threw away after one bite.
Are cider donuts a New England thing? (I don’t know if you live in NE, actually.) I remember them in college in Vermont, but I can say that I’ve never seen them here in Atlanta.

I love cider donuts. When I was a kid, we bought a bag of cider donuts when we were driving through in Vermont–so good!

Crispy leaves, hot tea, real shoes, and especially scarves! Yay! What a miserable summer. The only thing that saved us was the James River, which runs right through Richmond. [now the dog's favorite new hot spot]
