What I’ve Been Waiting For

Mockingjay

All of August has been one big lead-up to today. It’s like I’ve gone through the month as one big breath in, never exhaling until right now.

I imagine this is how many of you must feel when you sign up for a race and spend months training. That last final month is a countdown to race day and when you’re finally at the finish line you realize this is what I’ve been waiting for.

I feel like that, minus the sweat.

Today I received Mockingjay in the mail. The final book in the Hunger Games trilogy. If you haven’t read the series, I suggest you buy it right now. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

The books are addictive and fast-paced (I read each of the first two, The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, in a day) and brilliant and so fun. Plus, unlike another series (rhymes with skylight) the prose doesn’t weigh down the story or force incessant eye rolls.

So tonight after work I’m planting my butt firmly on the couch and not going to bed until I turn that last page. The Man will lose a wife for the night. Then I’ll pass the book on to him–because The Man also loves The Book–and watch as he’s sucked in for one final ride.

ALSO: If you think it’s a good idea to go google Mockingjay or Hunger Games and read about the series, BE CAUTIOUS. Seriously. There are all sorts of spoilers out there, so the best thing you could do is read the summary on Amazon or Barnes & Noble or go check it out at your local indie bookstore. After that, stop reading. Spoiled endings do not a good book make.

While I go devour this book, you can head over here to enter my final Totally Awesome Beauty Giveaway. Wee!

Have you ever so eagerly anticipated a book release—and which?

Who’s read the Hunger Games series? For those who have, two words: Team Peeta (♥) or Team Gale?

I’ll have to check out these books because, dang! you are crazy passionate about them! ;-)

You would probably not approve of my taste in books…I live for business, fitness, nutrition, and cookbooks. They’re one of my guilty pleasures!

I like nonfiction, too. Though I’d take a fitness or nutrition book over business any day. The latter kinda makes me sleepy.

Aha! I was looking for some reading material. Going to look for this in our school library tomorrow :D

Tracey Reply:

Mockingjay might not be in the library yet–it was just released today. But definitely search out The Hunger Games. And if they don’t have it, beg them to order it.

I’ve never heard of that series. But you make me feel like I’m missing out! :p

I remember quite well being overly excited for the Harry Potter series to come out… especially the last couple. Yeah… I was 22.

I love Harry Potter.

Back in high school I used to have late-night parties with my friends while we’d wait in line for the next Harry Potter book. I really miss it! It was so much fun to get out inner HP nerds on ;)

I’ve never heard of this series, but I’m contemplating picking it up as it obviously comes so recommended.

I think if you like Harry Potter, you’d like this. It’s young adult, not middle grade like HP, and it’s dystopian not fantasy, but still really, really good.

Hmmm, never heard of this. Going to have to check it out. Is the writing good? I liked the idea of the Twilight series but found the writing abyssmal. Recently, I was eagerly awaiting the third book in the Stieg Larsson series of books.

Tracey Reply:

Yes, totally. The Hunger Games is well written. I couldn’t do Twilight for the same reason as you.

I really wish I was into books! All I read are trashy chick lit books. I seriously need to expand my reading :)

I need to read more books, I’m so awful. I haven’t read The Help or Eat, Live, Pray, eeks!

Tracey Reply:

I haven’t read Eat, Pray, Love but I did read The Help and it’s really good. Totally different from this series but really good.

I got The Help from the library -very tattered but still readable – haven’t started it yet..on my to-do list…perhaps I should stop trying to read 4 at once? ;) And self-help books…they’re getting “old”…i think they honestly make you think too much about thinking – too much “in your mind”!

:)

You read like The Man. He reads a half dozen books at once so it takes forever to finish one. He likes it that way, though. I’m the opposite. I have to read just one at a time; and I can’t start one until I finish the one I’m in.

I love the Hunger Games trilogy! I just downloaded Mockingjay to my NOOK…I’m putting my other book on hold so I can read it. I can’t wait!

Tracey Reply:

Tell me when you’re done so we can discuss. The Man will start after me, and I can’t imagine holding it all in while I wait for him to read it.

This series is actually on my “to read” list at shelfari.com, haha. I will definitely have to read this next.

I have been engrossed in Steig Larson’s novels. I just started the final one, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, yesterday. They are so good!

Tracey Reply:

I have the Steig Larson books on my list, too. I’ve only heard awesome things about them.

So cliche but I waited for Harry Potter 7. Ironically, I absolutely REFUSED to read them until the first six were already out… I thought I was way too cool. But then I read them and became addicted and 7 came out when I was backpacking in Europe… I had to go through three countries to find it and finally did so at a tiny train station in the French Riviera. I read it in one day in a hostel on a swiss mountaintop bawling silently in the common room while the other travelers tried not to stare at me. :)

Tracey Reply:

That’s dedication and love right there. Though I’d trek through the Riviera for a good book. I’d do it for free, too.

I actually haven’t heard of this trilogy, but I like fast-paced books, and love book recommendations. I’ll have to add these to my reading list. The last anticipated book…the last Harry Potter book…yup, I’m a sucker for a little magic!

I’ve never really anticipated a release, but I love to read books. I’ll have to check these out!

I love a lot of books…I’m a huge book nerd…but I HATE Twilight. I just don’t enjoy it at all. So since you said this is better than Twilight, I think I’ll trust you and give it a shot.
I did like Harry Potter. I read it when I was younger, but I don’t think that is the only reason why I liked it…I just think it was so much more creative. I’m not usually into the whole fantasy thing, but HP deserved all the hype because it was so imaginative and interesting.
Anyway, I will look for this series now!

Okay, so I really really need to read these books. They are right up my alley.
With no car, I can’t get to a library. Boy, its been really tough…sometimes I get overwhelmed by it. Not cool. Not even describable.

I read The Chronicles of Narnia (all7) in 10 days :)
Then I went 2 weeks without reading a thing…ha! I tend to do that.

I have to re-read a book now, cause I can’t get anywhere to get a new one….its kind of a depressing book, but I dont have much option!

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a book that left me hungry for the next one. I need to find one of those.

Two words: TEAM GALE!

What a fun series to read! Like you, I read the first two in one day (each). But, I was slightly disappointed with Mockingjay. I felt it went too slow compared to the first two, but that didn’t stop me from reading it!

Right now I’m reading “Cutting for Stone”. Have you read it yet? My aunt said it’s one of the best books she’s ever read!

[Reply]

Katie Reply:

Come to think of it, I jumped the gun on my Team Gale. I’m half and half. I love them both! It would be a tough decision if I were Katniss!

[Reply]

Tracey Reply:

I definitely thought Mockingjay felt a bit different than the other two, but I still enjoyed it. It also was the most emotional, I though. Not to give spoilers to anyone who may read this response, but when that thing at the end happened with that person Katniss cared about? I was bawling. Bawling!

And also, Team Peeta for sure. He had me at the bread incident. *swoon*

I’ve never read Cutting for Stone, but I’ll have to check it out. I’m always looking for new novels to add to my ridiculously long wish list. :) I’m totally enjoying YA now, so if you need recommendations on good books there, let me know!
