Real Pizza

Forgive the iPhone pic. Oh, and if you live in Northern Virginia, head here and eat this right now.

In other news, I fear I’m getting sick. My head’s about 45 pounds heavy and I know from Jerry Maguire that the human head weighs 8 pounds. On top of that I’m the kind of exhausted I imagine comes from spending 48 hours awake. Only I’ve slept soundly each night.
That’d be just like me, too—getting sick right in time for the weekend.
But because of all that, this post will be super short. (Trust me, you don’t want me rambling on and on while my head is officially turning to sickly mush. It’s nonsensical. It’s not funny.) I want to address something…
Thanks to the Healthy Living Summit that some of you attended in Chicago, the blogosphere has been peppered with photos of deep-dish pizza. No offense to any Chicagoans out there, but that ain’t pizza. That’s crust cake with marinara.
Real pizza has four things:
1. San Marzano tomato sauce.
2. Fresh mozzarella.
3. Fresh basil.
And of course, 4. A crust so thin it droops when you pick it up.

Period. No 6-inch crust that sits in your stomach like a rock. No knives necessary. Kapiche?

Yum! That pizza looks delicious! Thanks for the recommendation!
I hope you feel better!

As long as the pizza is not covered in meat I’ll eat it!
I hope you’re ok!

THANK YOU!!! Deep dish pizza is not pizza, it is a casseroll. The end!

Yes! It is like a casserole. But not in a good way, in my opinion.

Sorry to hear you’re feeling crappy right before the weekend… no worries- that’s when it happens to me, too. It’s like as soon as I sit to rest, it all rushes in. Typical.
Now… the pizza thing… lol. Ah the deep dish- people go nuts about it when they come to visit. Honestly? I really only have deep dish when visitors come. Because it is a pretty hefty meal and I can pack away quite a bit, but the sizeable amount of carbs and cheese are something I need to prep for… lol
I’m a total thing crust girl. For me it’s all about that combo of marinara and toppings. Pack.It.On.

Ditto to Amy..I can totally pack away the Deep Dish and it’s one of my guilty pleasures that I’ll never stop indulging in. However, on a more ‘everyday’ basis, I got for medium crust, plain cheese, maybe some fresh basil…and if I’m making my own, I put arugula on it!

Is Ballston the closest Metro stop? Because that pizza looks incredible and finding my pizza place in VA has been on the top of my foods to try list. Hope you start to feel better!

Ohmygoodness, please go here. It took me forever and a half to find good pizza in Northern Virginia since pizza around her generally sucks. This is about five minutes from the Ballston metro by car, so probably a 15 minute walk. It’s not in the main Ballston area, though. It’s a small storefront next to a 7-Eleven or gas station. But so good.

I am a HUGE lover of pizza, but when I adopted a clean eating lifestyle I had to go to a whole wheat crust which I know does not sound as good, but I am really starting to love it.

I only know one place around me that offers a whole wheat crust, but I like it a lot. Too bad so few pizza shops offer it.

YESS BABY. I’m actually a pizza-crust fan (I love dipping that last doughy strip in sauce, or better yet, cheese) but once I had a pizza in a Japanese-style little cafe (with amazing cakes by the way) and it. was. divine. The crust was SO thin it was like just a sheet of pastry, and the bit with no cheese was so crisp, and the pizza had to be rolled up on itself to be eaten because it was so floppy. The cheese was so flavourful, and there was a nice touch of sauce… Mmm. Amazing. I’ll take a photo next time.

I’ve been eating a lot of pizza lately. The thin crust is definitely key! I wish Italian pizza was more prevalent in the U.S.!

Oooh, me too. I bet you’re swimming in it over in Venice. Have a real slice for me.

As a native Chicago gal, I feel I must defend the beloved deep dish a bit. If done well, it is excellent pizza and if you have only had “Chicago-style” at the likes of an Uno’s chain than you haven’t had real deep dish. Try Pizano’s on Madison and you will see what I mean.
That being said, I love, love, love a good coal fired, thin crust margherita pizza.
Hope you feel better soon.

Okay, okay. Maybe I’d warm to it if I were in Chicago. But I can’t see how it would possibly come close to the amazingness that is thin crust.

Mmm… thin crust with double sauce, no cheese and lots of veggies (fresh basil, artichoke hearts and tomatoes are my faves) for me!
I hope you feel better soon!

I am SO sorry to hear about your big head and that you are under the weather. I have a summer cold and it blows, literally. Try to take it easy.
Must you tease me with such cheesy, tasty pics. MMM!

I meant to say, “so you are a thin crust girl”.
I don’t discriminate with pizza…all kinds work for me.

Well, this iPhone camera is phoo-ey but this emergency spur-of-the-moment pizza run didn’t leave time for me to get my real camera. I figured you guys would understand food > photos.

I like a thin crust with tons of veggies. Sorry you don’t feel well!

Feel better soon! LOL your about 47 lbs over your head weight!
Girl – now you KNOW I love pizza – I love this! So agree with you…your pizza pic beats the other ones I’ve been seeing. I ADORE pizza…probably eat it 3x/week…;)

I loove thin crust pizza. I have had the deep-dish style once and it just wasn’t my thing. Basil + tomato slices as the toppings = perfection! This post has made my recent pizza craving resurface. Oh and I love your blog, by the way. Hope you feel better!

Hi! I’m also from DC! I just found your blog on HLB..Looking forward to reading more

It’s better than it looks, actually. If it were possible, I’d send it to you through the computer. And then I’d patent that technology and make a billion bucks.
