When Life Gives You Nectarines…

Tea Top

Brief public service announcement: You can still enter to win 16 makeup, hair, and skin-care products in my Totally Awesome Beauty Package here. It’s open for entries until Friday so head over there and leave a comment, tweet about it, or become my friend (officially).

And a dilemma: What to do with a perfectly good yet overripe white nectarine.

Here’s the thing. I love nectarines and peaches, I really do, but the white nectarines that The Man picked up at the store a couple weeks ago just aren’t the same. They’re missing the citrusy bite of the regular variety and I’m all about tart flavors (as evidenced by my love letter to vinegar).

White peaches are perfectly lovely fruit but when ripe the flavor more closely resembles those sugary peach gummies I used to load up on at the candy store when I was a kid. (Note: Not that my mother bought us candy or anything, because that would be bad. Or awesome.)

So last night I had a super ripe and ridiculously sweet white nectarine that was about to either die a slow death on my table or be eaten right then. I’m generally against death (unless it involves cockroaches or mice, in which case I say, Die, Suckers, Die!). I decided to spare its life.

If you’re wondering, cutting up a white nectarine and putting it in a glass of ice water is a very good idea. The water gets lightly flavored. The nectarine slices are tamed.

Nectarine Water

Cutting up white nectarine and putting it in a glass of iced tea is an even better idea. Just so you know.

Nectarine Tea

I’ve made this before with watermelon, which rocks but was missing from my fridge. I can only assume other fruits—raspberries, blueberries, kiwi, whatever—would be equally as good.

What are some interesting ways you guys get your fruit?

I like to put fruit in my drinks too! Especially when the drinks involve wine (sangria), coconut rum, or some other type of fruity cocktail ;)

I forgot about sangria but YES!

I definitely like fruit smoothies :) that’s not that interesting though. more interesting–I sometimes mix fruit pieces into grains like brown rice and buckwheat for a slightly sweet filling dish.

I’ve never thought about putting peaches directly in tea, but it looks awesomely good! I like frozen raspberries and strawberries in white wine. Delicious in the summertime (and the berries keep the wine chilled). When I get tired of smoothies and fruit salad, I try to sneak some fruit into my sweets–on top of fro-yo, fruit muffins, breads, etc. That way, I can have my dessert and feel like I’m being (somewhat) healthy! :)

I love raspberries in Champagne, but putting frozen fruit in wine is a great idea. That’d be great for a party since it’s really pretty, too. Thanks!

Oh, this is such a great idea! But we rarely get overripe fruit because we’d just eat it while it’s not even ripe yet ;) our family really, really likes fruit.

That is a GREAT idea! I actually hate any fruit to be ripe…I prefer all of it to be slightly underripe. I need that crunch!!

Tracey Reply:

I agree. I much prefer the crunch. These got to the overripe state because, well, they’re kind of not my thing. Next time: regular nectarines or peaches. You learn something new all the time, I tell ya.

I love adding blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries to sparkling water. I can imagine nectarines would be tasty as well. I also love cucumber water. It’s a perfect subtle refresher.

he he he… I actually dislike most fruit. I’m quirky. But I make up for it by having plenty of veggie love…

I love over ripe peaches in plain greek yogurt. The tart yogurt balances out the sweetness. And it has a pretty similar texture to flavored yogurts.

I love eating fruit in a big bowl of yogurt with a little crunchy granola. Daily parfaits have become a staple in my world.

I pretty much add fruit to everything. Cereal and yogurt messes. In salads. On its own. With nut butter (oh wait…EVERYTHING has nut butter slathered on it/in it for me)…

It always puzzles me how there seems to be a fruit-phobia for many people…its fruit…not sure why its so scary, but to each their own!

I love to put some fruit in my oatmeal in the morning and my current fav combo is fresh pineapple with some cinnamon and nutmeg. So yummy!

That is a fabulous idea. I love it – although my little boys might wonder why I was putting things in my water because I always tell them not too!!

Remind them, nectarines and fingers or Stormtroopers are totally different things.

I think you need to start making your own kombucha…you already love tea and vinegar…omg you just need a scoby! Seriously it’s pretty darn easy to get going and you would love it!

I also put raw veggies in a vinegar bath and let them “ferment” that way, sort of pickling, but i dont boil any water or anything . I use countertop methods b/c it’s EASY..ha!

Tracey Reply:

I’m going to be honest: kombucha kinda scares me. The whole mushroom thing. It’s one of those things that I wish I tried before I knew what it is. But, you know, baby steps. One day. ;)
