I just went to my ortho guy today who had originally offered PRP therapy to me in Oct/08..for tronchanteric bursitis. I’ve had it on and off since 2001, w/some relief from several cortisone shots. Well, the ortho doc blantly told me he and his partner and their Ortho group are not doing PRP therapy. When he realized he was the one who told me about it originally, he got pretty defensive! His reason for not doing PRP therapy treatment is that it is not covered under any insurance! I was appalled to say the least. He offered me yet another cortisone shot, and when I questioned how many of those I could have he was non-commital..needless to say I took the shot, but w/NEVER go back to him again for how he treated me. I live in S. Florida so will explore other dr’s. Thanks for the blog it was very helpful!

@Tracey It was huge relief to know that you are feeling improvement.Im in a country where nobody has ever heard of PRP including doctors and no doctor is willing to do it so Im on rest and inflammatory without any results.I pray oneday ill get some relief from my pain using PRP if it will be available in my country ever.

I’ve gotten three PRP treatments so far, and while I think it’s helping I’ve taken a bit of a break for reasons not related to my knees. I agree–the cartilage is so difficult to heal, and it’s incredibly painful! I’m so sorry to hear you have PFPS, too. I hope you find a way to alleviate your pain!

Hey Tracie,
read your blog and im wondering to know how are you doing with your treatments.Any help or progress?This cartilage is very difficult issue to heal and I dont know that if it helps or not however I will pray for you.im suffering from PFPS in both knees which is bad.

By the way, I also tried prolotherapy, which is more mild than PRP and might be worth looking into. I did two treatments of that but since I didn’t feel any improvements my doctor suggested doing PRP. And since I’m so hard-core and love having giant blood-filled needles jabbed into my knee, I complied.

Oh my gosh this sounds amazing (well, you know what I mean). It sounds a lot more natural (&effective) to me than surgery or even continued cortisone shots. I’m definitely keeping this in mind as my next step!

Good luck rehabbing your ACL. I do believe PRP can help, though with my problem (cartilage damage) it requires more treatments than, say, torn tendons or ligaments. So I’m not 100 percent yet. But I think it’s definitely worth looking into. I started with prolotherapy, which is way less intense, but I think PRP works faster. My doctor generally starts with prolo to see the progression then moves to PRP if prolo isn’t working fast enough. Prolo is much easier, so if it works, then there’s no reason to do PRP. Good luck!

Very informative and a nice layout!! I recently had ACL reconstruction and am researching to see if PRP therapy can speed up the recovery process! I am interested to hear more about Prolotherapy as well…
